Christof Heyns is the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and Professor of human rights law and Director of the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa at the University of Pretoria. He is a member of the United Nations Independent Investigation on Burundi.
Mr Heyns is a former Dean of the Faculty of Law and former Director of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. He teaches in the human rights programmes at the University of Oxford, the University of Geneva and the American University Washington College of Law. Mr. Heyns is a founding co-editor of the African Human Rights Law Reports and a founding co-editor of the African Human Rights Law Journal. He serves on editorial boards of international journals based in the UK, The Netherlands, Uganda, Brazil and Costa Rica. His academic degrees include PhD (University of the Witwatersrand); LLM (Yale Law School), MA in Philosophy, LLB (University of Pretoria). He was awarded Fulbright (at Yale and Harvard) and Alexander von Humboldt (Heidelberg) Fellowships as well as the University of Pretoria’s Chancellor’s Award for Teaching.
