Jonathan D. Grossberg is a Practitioner-in-Residence in the Janet R. Spragens Federal Tax Clinic at American University Washington College of Law. Prior to joining the faculty at WCL, Professor Grossberg was a tax associate at Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP in Philadelphia and Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP in New York City. He represented clients in a variety of areas, including tax-related aspects of mergers and acquisitions, partnership formation and dissolution, corporate restructuring, corporate financing and lending, renewable energy and related tax credit issues, like-kind exchanges, and tax compliance issues, especially those related to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. While in private practice he maintained a significant pro bono practice for which he won an award from the Legal Aid Society and was designated an Empire State Counsel by the New York State Bar Association.

During Spring Semester 2016, Professor Grossberg taught Federal Income Taxation as an adjunct professor at Cornell Law School.

Prior to entering private practice, Professor Grossberg clerked for the Honorable Joseph H. Gale of the United States Tax Court. During the summer after his graduation from the LL.M. in Taxation program at New York University School of Law, Professor Grossberg served as a legislation fellow at the Joint Committee on Taxation.

While a student at Cornell Law School, Professor Grossberg was an article editor of the Cornell Law Review and published a note, “The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the Federal Arbitration Act, and the Future of Consumer Protection,” which won the student note division writing competition of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers. While at New York University School of Law, he served as a graduate editor of the Tax Law Review.

Professor Grossberg is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, and he has contributed to two sets of comments that the Tax Section has submitted to the Internal Revenue Service on proposed regulations.
