Alvina Reckman-Myers First Year Moot Court Tournament

The Alvina Reckman-Myers First Year Moot Court Competition gives first-year students the opportunity to test their appellate oral advocacy skills in a low-stakes environment while receiving substantive feedback from Moot Court Honor Society members. The Competition prepares first-year students for their Legal Rhetoric spring oral argument and Moot Court's Spring Qualifying Tournament (SQT). Two preliminary rounds will take place on January 16, 2021; thirty-two competitors will be invited back to compete in the elimination rounds on January 17; and four finalists will square off before a panel of practicing judges and/or AUWCL professors in the afternoon on January 17.

Demonstration Session: We are hosting two Alvina-specific information sessions that will be held on November 12, 2020, at 9:00 p.m. and on November 13, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. The slideshow for the sessions will be available online for those who are unable to attend. Additionally, we will be hosting an Alvina Advocacy Workshop before the competition (date TBD). At this Workshop, we will discuss the substance of the competition, provide tips on how to structure an argument, and answer any questions about Alvina and Moot Court.

On November 9, 2020, at 4:30 p.m. and on November 12, 2020 at 8:00 p.m., Moot Court Honor Society will demonstrate appellate oral arguments during the Joint Honor Societies' Demonstration Session. This session is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the three Honor Societies at WCL: Moot Court, Mock Trial, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Recommendations for Preparation: Competitors are strongly encouraged and permitted to read all cases cited in the record. Competitors are prohibited from consulting any other materials, which include, but are not limited to, law reviews, briefings, white papers, and other court documents not referenced in the record. See the Competition Rules for more information about how to prepare.
