State & Local Government

Working in the legislative or executive branches of the state and local government

Overview

The executive and legislative branches of state and many county and municipal governments are structured similarly to the federal government. Jobs for attorneys are available in law enforcement, regulation and administration. Many of the factors that characterize federal government employment are present in state and local government. For example, both address similar legal issues and, in both, lawyers work within an agency setting. Although opportunities exist for attorney placement at the state level, you must exercise initiative to identify and apply directly for most positions because few state and local governments recruit outside of the state. In addition, the application process may require completion of special forms. Contact directly the state or local legal department or agency for application information, and refer to the resources below.
