Meet the Directors


Judge Peter J. Messitte

The Brazil-U.S. Legal and Judicial Studies Program is headed by Senior U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte, a longtime friend and colleague of the Brazilian Judiciary and Bar.  Judge Messitte is a former Member of the International Judicial Relations Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference, where he chaired the Working Group on Latin America and the Caribbean.  He is currently Special Advisor to the Advisory Council of the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean.  Judge Messitte speaks fluent Portuguese and has written and spoken widely about Brazil-U.S. legal and judicial topics for many years.

Claudia C. Tomazi Peixoto
Associate Director

Claudia C. Tomazi Peixoto is the Associate Director of the Brazil-U.S. Legal and Judicial Studies Program at Washington College of Law. Before joining the program, she was a professor at the Catholic University of Brasilia and worked for the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the UN in NY. She studied law at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), the University of Brasilia (UnB), New York University (NYU) and the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA).
