Job Posting: Legal Aid of DC AmeriCorps Fellowship

The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia seeks an attorney to serve as an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow to work on a foreclosure prevention project. The Project will engage in outreach, counseling and litigation to assist low-income homeowners to prevent loss due to foreclosure or foreclosure related fraud. The selected attorney will engage in a range of activities to assist low-income individuals and families to prevent the loss of a home through foreclosure. Equal Justice Works Fellowships Application Now Online

The Equal Justice Works Fellowships Program addresses the shortage of attorneys working on behalf of traditionally under-served populations and causes in the United States and its territories. The program provides financial and technical support to lawyers working on innovative and effective legal projects. The two-year Fellowships offer salary and generous loan repayment assistance; a national training and leadership development program; and other forms of support during the term of the Fellowship.  Since 2000, 17 WCL graduates have received Equal Justice Works Fellowships.

Fellowships a Great Path; Deadlines Fast Approaching

Post-graduate fellowships provide a unique opportunity to create your ideal job and provide guaranteed funding for a one or two-year period following graduation.  Fellows have made great strides in public service and have an incredible impact in the communities they serve.  Fellowship programs can also serve as a launching pad to a long-term public interest career as a significant percentage of fellows remain in the field after the fellowship period ends.  The two best known fellowship programs are Equal Justice Works and Skadden.  Many non-profit organizations seek out candidates to apply to these and other funding organizations.  Most organizations who are volunteering to sponsor a fellowship candidate will set their deadlines in July in order to give them and you time to develop an application packet.  The information the sponsor will need is very similar to, but doesn't need to be quite as detailed at this stage, as the fellowship application materials. Therefore, before contacting one of these sponsors, it is a good idea to have your project idea fully developed so that they can add input and evaluate your candidacy.
