Legal Eagle Vol. 22 - May 2010

Dear Friends,

Thank you!

As the Spring 2010 semester draws to a close, and we look forward to commencement and the summer programs, I would like to thank you for your time and support of WCL, and your generosity with students this past year.

You and your fellow alumni came out in force! You served as moot court and mock trial judges, participated in the Lawyer Reentry Program, attended dozens of Founders programs, and mentored both current and newly-admitted students in person or on the phone or by email.

I had the pleasure to work with more than 30 students groups this year on everything from recruiting alumni speakers, to alumni event attendees and mentors. The students continue to rely on our alumni to give them advice and direction and to share their personal stories. From the feedback I have received, the alumni from these interactions to be valuable as well.

Some of the volunteer opportunities this year and next include:

  • Serving as a speaker or panelist for student groups/classes
  • Speaking with students via email/phone about opportunities in your geographic or practice area
  • Participating in mentor discussions and activities
  • Acting as a judge for Moot Court and Mock Trial Competitions
  • Conducting mock interviews
  • Attending student/alumni networking receptions

Please let us know if you would be interested in assisting students in the future. No matter where you live and/or work, your expertise is needed. If you are available to assist, please send an email to alumni@wcl.american.edu. I will also continue to send out blast email messages throughout the academic year with more timely and specific requests.

Our current students benefit greatly from your involvement with the school and your participation in their educational experience. The class of 2010 has great role models from which to draw for their future.

Thanks again for all you do for WCL! Have a great summer

Shelly Horn
Director of Alumni Relations

Consider Becoming an Alumni Mentor!

One of the best ways for students and alumni to get the inside scoop about employment trends, opportunities, and information about what it is like to practice a particular area of law, or with a particular employer, is by asking alumni who have "been there" and "done that."  WCL Alumni Mentors play an integral role in affording students and fellow alumni the opportunity to conduct networking and informational interviews.  In a competitive marketplace, the need for such valuable contacts and opportunities cannot be overstated.  Statistically speaking, more lawyers get jobs through networking than from any other job search method!  The Office of Career & Professional Development encourages you to enroll today to be a Mentor by contacting alumni counselor Matthew Pascocello at 202-274-4092 or mpasco@wcl.american.edu.
