Legal Eagle Vol. 15 Winter 2009

Happy Holidays!

This has been a banner year for our alumni group. We have had record turnout at networking events, more than 1400 of you joined our new alumni online community InCircle (in just nine months!), and hundreds of you volunteered to help mentor, speak to students, and attend student group programs.

We thank you for all you do. And we continuously strive to bring you new benefits and keep you connected to WCL. Check out the new Alumni Resource Guide (available online at www.wcl.american.edu/alumni (click on the Alumni Resources button on the left, and then click “What WCL Can Do For You”) chock full of information on job resources, networking opportunities, and much more. And don’t forget to email alumni@wcl.american.edu to share your class notes (marriage, new job, other exciting news).

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a great new year!

ALUMNI RELATIONS

InCircle Alumni Online Community

Do you have questions for fellow alumni? Need information about the bar in your state? Want to arrange a get-together for alumni in your area? Reach out to fellow alumni using the “Opportunities” link in InCircle. All you have to do is click on “Opportunities” on your home page and fill in the blanks, choose who will receive it, and then send it. It is a fast and easy way to reach alumni using your own criteria.

WCL has taken advantage of this new service by listing events, surveys, student asks and more. It has been very useful for us and should be for you too.

To join InCircle, go to wcl.affinitycircles.com. Skip the email box and, instead, put in your name and AU ID number. You can get your ID number by sending an email to alumni@wcl.american.edu and including your full name, graduate year and degree earned.

Alumni Job-Search Assistance

WCL alumni have full access to OCPD’s on-line and office resources to use for their career development.  Alumni are encouraged to register for the on-line jobs database, CareerLink, through the OCPD website. Also, under OCPD’s Alumni Services link, alumni will find access to the Mentor Database, Job Exchange Bulletins, information about Reciprocity to other law schools’ career offices, as well as free access to the Career Library portion of Lexis.
Contact: Matthew Pascocello, Esq. is our Alumni Counselor and is happy to meet with alumni by appointment either in person or by phone. Contact Matthew at 202-274-4092 or mpasco@wcl.american.edu.

Consider Becoming an Alumni Mentor!

One of the best ways for students and alumni to get the inside scoop about employment trends, opportunities, and information about what it is like to practice a particular area of law, or with a particular employer, is by asking alumni who have "been there” and “done that.”  WCL Alumni Mentors play an integral role in affording students and fellow alumni the opportunity to conduct networking and informational interviews.  In a competitive marketplace, the need for such valuable contacts and opportunities cannot be overstated.  Statistically speaking, more lawyers get jobs through networking than from any other job search method!  The Office of Career & Professional Development encourages you to enroll today to be a Mentor by contacting alumni counselor Matthew Pascocello at: 202-274-4092 or by email at  mpasco@wcl.american.edu.

Recruitment Programs/Employment Opportunities for Students and Alumni

OCPD is currently accepting registrations for the 2009 Spring Recruitment Program, which will start in January. The office will also launch the registration process for the 2009 Fall Recruitment Program in the coming months. For more information or to participate, please contact Robin Fulton, Recruitment Coordinator, at rfulton@wcl.american.edu or (202) 274-4095.
As always, if you know of any opportunities for recent graduates or other alumni, please forward that information to jobs@wcl.american.edu.
