Meet AUWCL's Annual Giving Chair
Mary Ellen Flynn, JD '88
A native of Queens, Mary Ellen Flynn was the first in her family to graduate from college. Financing a legal education was a challenge. However, with a generous scholarship package and part time jobs, including one in the AUWCL student lounge, she turned her life-long dream of becoming a lawyer into a reality.
In 1998, Mary Ellen founded Andalman & Flynn and was recently named one of the Top 25 Divorce Lawyers by Bethesda Magazine. "My law firm is everything I've always wanted," she says.
Continuing the tradition that helped her get through law school, Mary Ellen has made philanthropy a priority for her and her family. She serves on the Dean's Advisory Council, has hired many AUWCL students as law clerks over the years, and has been a mentor to countless others. Mary Ellen accepted Dean Grossman's invitation to serve as AUWCL's new Annual Giving Chair in 2013, and continues to serve under Dean Nelson. In this important leadership role, she shares her passion for AUWCL and encourages fellow alumni to engage and support the school.
"The best part about giving to AUWCL," she says, "is being able to designate my gift to whatever I want. I usually support scholarships and the clinics, and, I was one of the first to make a pledge to support the construction of AUWCL's new home on the Tenley Campus. I'm excited about the accessibility and visibility the new campus brings to the law school, and I invite others to join me in supporting the continued growth of the new campus."
Why Your Gift Matters This Year, and Every Year
Annual giving serves as the foundation of the American University Washington College of Law's philanthropic support. Annual gifts are made by AUWCL's own alumni, students, faculty, and staff in addition to longtime supporters, businesses, and foundations, and we could not be where we are today without their loyal generosity.
Take Pride in Your Law School!
Annual gifts are an indication of the pride that our AUWCL family has for this remarkable and historic institution. Your support today goes to work immediately, ensuring that one more student achieves their goal of becoming an AUWCL graduate. Whether providing scholarships and fellowships, emergency financial aid, recruiting stellar faculty, welcoming visiting speakers, or enhancing technology in classrooms, annual gifts enable the law school to provide resources not covered by tuition.
Why Annual Giving Matters?
Annual giving is a way of demonstrating your support for the law school's mission to ensure a legal education to deserving students who study at AUWCL. With so many students relying on financial assistance and scholarships to pursue their academic goals, annual gifts made to AUWCL change lives every day.
