Prof. Sherley Cruz Presents at Worker's Rights Town Hall

Prof. Sherley Cruz presenting

On April 10, 2018, Sherley Cruz, a Practitioner-in-Residence in AUWCL's Civil Advocacy Clinic (CAC) presented at a town hall event. The event launched a recent report from the Just Pay Coalition that recommends strategic enforcement of labor laws to eliminate wage theft in Washington, DC. The Just Pay Coalition is made up of "non-profits, unions, service providers, worker centers and community groups dedicated to securing and promoting workplace justice in DC," including DC Jobs With Justice.

The CAC at AUWCL focuses primarily on economic justice, including employment law and wage theft cases in the DC area. Members of certain immigrant communities are particularly vulnerable to wage theft because they fear that standing up to exploitative employers will draw unwanted attention to their immigration status. Our students' advocacy on behalf of their clients compliments the issue-based advocacy of workers' rights organizations, both of which aim to end the abusive treatment of workers.

You can read the Just Pay Coalition's full report, entitled " Making Our Laws Real: Protecting Workers Through Strategic Enforcement of DC's Labor Laws," here.
