SJD Program

The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is the most advanced law degree at American University Washington College of Law. The program brings together aspiring legal academics and other top legal professionals from around the world who wish to research and write a dissertation of publishable quality under the instruction of faculty members who are recognized experts and leading practitioners in their fields.


Young Joo

SJD Candidate


Young Joo, an SJD candidate at American University Washington College of Law, is completing his dissertation titled “Cyber Matrix: Unearthing the Fundamental Questions of 21st Century Law of War and Beyond.” His fields of research includes: International Law and Use of Force, Law of War, National Security Issues and Foreign Relations Law. His research interests lie in exploring the legal, jurisprudential, and policy implications surrounding 21st century war phenomena. Prior to joining the S.J.D. Program, Mr. Joo taught at Soongsil University, functioned as a legal and policy aid to a Representative of the Korean National Assembly, and served as a researcher at the Center for Korean Legal Studies at Columbia Law School, the Ministry of Justice of Korea, and the Supreme Prosecutors Office of Korea.
