SJD Program

The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is the most advanced law degree at American University Washington College of Law. The program brings together aspiring legal academics and other top legal professionals from around the world who wish to research and write a dissertation of publishable quality under the instruction of faculty members who are recognized experts and leading practitioners in their fields.


Silja Aebersold

SJD Candidate


Silja Aebersold is an SJD Candidate at American University Washington College of Law. Her doctoral research focuses on the cultural rights of the Afro-descendant population in Latin America, Colombia, and Nicaragua.

Prior to joining the Washington College of Law SJD program, Ms. Aebersold worked as a research assistant and coach of international human rights moot courts at the University of Lucerne. She has also gained experiences in a Swiss law firm and non-profit organizations in Colombia, Tanzania, and Switzerland. Ms. Aebersold currently holds a Dean’s Fellowship with the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. She speaks German, French, Spanish, and English.
