Externships & Career

A successful start in an international career requires substantial preparation. This includes an externship at an international law firm or institution. Our dedicated LL.M. Career Counselor and faculty American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) provide support to students in identifying and securing an externship.

In addition, we provide advice and support for career and professional development to LL.M. students and alumni. We advise students on opportunities to enhance their careers, train them on how to stand out as a candidate, and host career seminars and workshops for networking & professional development. We also prepare students to attend externship and recruitment fairs, and provide a forum for cultivating and maintaining relationships with employers.

The services offered by the LL.M. Career Counselor include:

  • An 8 workshop Career and Professional Development Program: these workshops deal with matters ranging from how to create a U.S. style résumé, developing an elevator pitch, through to interview tips.
  • Résumé, cover letter, and statement of interest review and support
  • Mock interview sessions
  • Guidance and support in creating and executing a strategy for developing a professional profile
  • Specifically tailored opportunities for showcasing, e.g. through giving presentations, involvement in conferences etc.
  • Opportunities to network with practitioners e.g. through employment and other professional panel events, small gatherings and direct references
  • Networking to expand the connections and relationships the law school has with law firms, NGOs, INGOs and IOs which work to the benefit of the student community
