  • Professor Figley to Testify before House Judiciary Subcommittee

    On Thurs., April 28, at 10 a.m., Professor Paul Figley will testify before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law in a hearing on the "Stop Settlement Slush Funds Act of 2016." This Act would prohibit government attorneys from entering settlements that require non-government defendants to make payments to persons who were not involved in the dispute or injured by the defendant's actions. The premise of the bill is that this practice allows Executive Branch attorneys to allocate payments, undermining Congress' "power of the purse" and our Constitutional system of checks and balances.   • Legal Rhetoric Program Hosts Legal Writing Workshop for Attorneys

    From April 28-29, 2016, the Legal Rhetoric Program at American University Washington College of Law conducted a Legal Writing Workshop for practicing attorneys. The intensive program was developed for Virginia lawyers in direct response to observations and recommendations about lawyer communications skills made during the 2012 Virginia State Bar Conclave on the future of legal education in Virginia. The program was a collaborative effort of the Legal Rhetoric Program, Virginia State Bar Section on Education of Lawyers, Virginia CLE, and the Virginia Bar Association's Law Practice Management Division.   • 1L Receives Prestigious Public Interest Labor Fellowship

    Evelyn Haro, a 1L in the evening section, has been selected for the highly competitive Peggy Browning Fellowship Program, which funds law students who dedicate their summers to advancing workers' rights. Haro will spend 10 weeks in the legal department of Service Employees International Union, a labor union that represents almost 1.9 million workers in more than 100 occupations in the United States and Canada.
