Peace Process and Human Rights in Colombia

Date: Tuesday, June 3, 2014
Time: 12:30PM - 02:00PM
Description: Over the last few years, the Academy has been exploring the processes of transition to peace and democracy in various countries of the Americas in the 80’sand 90’s. Such processes have generated an intense debate regarding the need to achieve peace, while preserving the human rights of the victims of violations during those civil wars. During the last decades, bodies such as the Inter- American Commission and Court on Human Rights have issued decisions regarding amnesty laws in various countries of the Americas. Moreover, the adoption of the Rome Statute created in the International Criminal Court is another relevant reference for the articulation of national transitional processes such as the one in Colombia. In this context, this panel will explore the effect that the current peace process in Colombia could have on human rights in this country. The panelists will explore what are the viable alternatives of “transitional justice” that could adequately address the need to achieve peace with the need to secure justice.
