Alternatives to Detention and the Right to Liberty and Security of Person in the Immigration Context

Description: Every individual has the right to liberty and to security of person, as well as the right to be free from arbitrary restrictions on her or his liberty. The use of alternatives to detention (ATD) is more humane and less costly than detention, and more in line with global trends generally. Please join the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, and the Immigrants’ Rights Coalition at Washington College of Law for a discussion of global and U.S. developments in the use of ATD, the human rights and costs savings associated with these developments, and challenges and opportunities to enhancing the use of ATD in the U.S., immediately followed by a reception.
