International Right-to- Know Day Celebration

Description: In a development that barely could have been envisioned by the authors of the Free- dom of In¬for¬¬mation Act four decades ago, and with a force that has been accelerating around the globe, people in more than 90 na¬tions of the world now en¬joy the benefits of “government trans¬parency” laws akin to the FOIA. In the Unit¬ed States, “Freedom of Infor¬ma¬tion Day" is cel¬¬ebrated each year on or near March 16 (the birthday of James Mad¬¬¬ison), and for the past decade mem¬bers of the in¬¬ternational trans¬par¬ency com¬mu¬ni¬¬¬¬t y around the world likewise have cel¬¬¬¬e¬¬brat¬ ed “In¬ternational Right-to-Know Day” an¬¬¬¬¬nu¬¬¬¬ al¬¬ly on Sep¬tember 28. And the Washington College of Law’s Collaboration on Gov¬ern¬¬¬ment Secrecy has be¬come the prin¬cipal lo¬ca¬¬tion for the cel¬e¬bra¬tion of Interna¬tional Right-to-Know Day in the United States now for more than half of that past dec¬ade.
