Freezing and Sezing Assets of Suspects Before International Criminal Tribunals

On Friday March 28 Assistant District Attorney Chris Santora, a former Trial Attorney at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, and Päivi Kaukoranta, Director General for Legal Affairs for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, spoke at the War Crimes Research Office. They discussed efforts to freeze and seize the assets of suspects before international criminal tribunals and explored potential solutions to making the process more effective. Mr. Santora and Ms. Kaukoranta were joined in a roundtable discussion by government officials, NGO representatives and WCL students.


20 Years Later: Reflections on International Justice from the first Chief Prosecutor of the ICTY (featuring Justice Richard Goldstone)

As part of the Founders Celebration, WCRO hosted Justice Richard Goldstone on Wednesday February 5th, 2014 from 12:00 pm -1:30 pm, including a luncheon, in WCL 603. Over 80 people attended the event, as Justice Goldstone reflected on achievements and lessons learned from the work of the ICTY over the past twenty years and its impact on the future of international justice.

Victim Participation at the International Criminal Court

The War Crimes Research Office, in collaboration with the American Society of International Law, hosted an event entitled “Victim Participation at the International Criminal Court: Is it Working?” on Thursday January 23rd in WCL 524. Over 35 people attended the event, including NGO, US government and embassy officials. WCRO Director Susana SáCouto led the panel discussion, which included Justice Hakan Friman and WCRO Assistant Director Katherine Thompson Cleary.

Sex and International Tribunals: The Erasure of Gender from the War Narrative (featuring Chiseche Mibenge)

The WCRO, along with the American Red Cross and The Women in International Law Interest Group of The American Society of International Law hosted Chiseche Mibenge, Assistant Professor at CUNY, on Monday November 11th from 3:00-4:30 in WCL 402. Dr. Mibenge discussed her new book, Sex and International Tribunals: The Erasure of Gender from the War Narrative, and answered questions from students.

The International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims and its Role in Justice and Development Efforts (featuring Kristin Kalla)

The WCRO hosted Kristin Kalla, Senior Programme Officer at the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims on Friday October 11th from 12:00-1:00 in WCL 601. Students heard about the Trust Fund and its role in justice and development efforts.

The WCRO hosted a panel of young professionals in the fields of International Criminal and Humanitarian law on Tuesday October 8th from 12:00-1:00 in WCL 401. Students heard about their experiences and participated in a question and answer session related to future careers in the field.
