Wireless Installation/Configuration for the WCL system.
Wireless for Microsoft Windows XP SP2
Introduction:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 supports wireless networking without the need for
additional software. Installing your wireless card on your laptop consists
of two main steps, installing your wireless card and configuring your
wireless card for AU's wireless network. Most laptops purchased within the
last two years will have wireless networking already built-in.
Requirements:
AU's wireless network requires a 802.11b/g compliant wireless network card
that supports 128bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). The card must be
correctly configured in order to participate in AU's wireless network.
Installation:
Simply turn on your laptop and insert your external wireless networking
card, if it is not installed internally. You may be prompted to run a
"wizard" to set up your card. Do not run the wizard, cancel out of it and
follow the steps outlined below.
Configuration:
Click on the START button.
Select CONTROL PANEL from the START MENU.
Click SECURITY CENTER icon.
Verify that the FIREWALL and AUTOMATIC UPDATES are both ON. Confirm that
you have up to date virus protection. If these options are not enabled,
follow the instructions in the Security Center before you connect to the
wireless or wired network. Computers that are not protected may become
infected with a virus and blocked from the network/Internet.
Click the WINDOWS FIREWALL icon.
Make sure the Firewall is ON ("Don't allow exceptions" should NOT be
checked.).
Click on the START button.
Select CONTROL PANEL from the START MENU.
Click on NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS in the Control Panel window.
Click on NETWORK CONNECTIONS on the next screen.
While you are viewing your Internet connections, look to see if you have a
connection called a NETWORK BRIDGE. This is a feature that allows you to
create a simple home network, but it will keep you from being able to
access the Internet using our network. If a network bridge is present,
right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select REMOVE FROM
BRIDGE. Do the same for all of your connections. Then right-click on the
Bridge itself and choose DISABLE. You are now ready to connect to the
network.
Right click on the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION icon and choose PROPERTIES.
Click on the WIRELESS NETWORKS tab.
Click the ADD BUTTON under Preferred networks.
Type wcl (lowercase as shown) in the NETWORK NAME (SSID) field.
For NETWORK AUTHENTICATION select OPEN.
For DATA ENCRYPTION select WEP.
Uncheck THE KEY IS PROVIDED FOR ME AUTOMATICALLY.
Type the NETWORK KEY in the field provided: efcbaa45b123f990a888bcfe00
Retype the Network Key in the CONFIRMATION NETWORK KEY field.
Click the AUTHENTICATION TAB at the top of the wcl properties window.
Uncheck ENABLE IEEE 802.1X AUTHENTICATION FOR THIS NETWORK.
Click the CONNECTION TAB and check CONNECT WHEN THIS NETWORK IS IN RANGE
Click OK to go back to the Wireless Networks tab.
Click on the ADVANCED button. (Not the Advanced tab.)
Select ACCESS POINT (INFRASTRUCTURE) NETWORKS ONLY.
Click CLOSE and your card should now connect to WCL's Wireless network.
Click on OK to close the Wireless Network Properties.
