It All Started With Our Founding Mothers

Back in 1896, Ellen Spencer Mussey and Emma Gillett created American University Washington College of Law, the first law school in the country founded by women. More than 100 years since its founding, this law school pursues passionately the values of dignity, diversity, and equal rights for all.

Founders’ Celebration 2013 honors the vision and principles of our Founding Mothers. It celebrates innovation and ideas, courage and commitment, and engagement and opportunities that bring together people from all over the world, across all areas of the law. Over the next five months you will feel a distinct energy throughout our campus. We hope you will join us in analyzing and shaping the important legal issues facing our nation and the world. Together we can Champion What Matters.

In 2012, our law school welcomed more than 7,000 Founders’ Celebration attendees to 86 programs, with nearly 650 distinguished speakers and over 1,000 organizations represented including governmental departments, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, U.S. and foreign law schools, law firms, and embassies. Founders’ Celebration 2013 will feature more than 87 events, seminars, panel discussions, and expert fora covering diverse topics such as international trade, labor rights, military justice reform, domestic violence, privacy issues, climate change, and the global economy. Many events will be co-sponsored by distinguished organizations, as well as offer Continuing Legal Education accreditation for legal professionals. I look forward to welcoming you to our community.
