Graduation Week & Commencement Activities

Each year the SBA funds a series of fun events for graduating students that take place the week between final exams and graduation. This year, graduation week will take place the week of May 13th - May 18th.

This year, the SBA has generously voted to fund several events. Most of these events do not have capacity for all graduating students, so please plan carefully and buy tickets/RSVP for the events you are interested in ASAP. There is a LOT of information below; please read it carefully for all the information you will need for Graduation Week.


Monday, May 13th: Potomac River Dinner Boat Cruise

Join your classmates on a semi-formal evening cruise around the Potomac and enjoy a buffet style dinner, mingling, and dancing on the water. There will be a cash bar available on board the boat for interested parties, but the costs of any alcoholic beverages are the responsibility of the drinker. Boarding time is 7:00pm at Pier 4, Water St., Washington, DC. Transportation to and from the Pier will NOT be provided. The cruise will last approximately 2.5-3 hours. Interested students may bring a significant other to this event.

Tickets for this event are FREE and first come first serve; the boat holds a maximum capacity of 200 students. Tickets for this event will be available in person on the dates listed below until sold out. Students will be limited to buying one ticket, or a maximum of two tickets if bringing a significant other. STUDENTS MAY NOT RESERVE TICKETS FOR OTHER STUDENTS.


Tuesday, May 14th – Thursday, May 16th: Beach Trip to Ocean City, MD


Come along on a fun-filled and relaxing 2-Day Beach Trip to Ocean City, MD. This event is open to all WCL graduating students, significant others, and friends.* The more the merrier!

Transportation
The SBA has funded charter buses to pick you up from the Tenleytown Metro on Tuesday morning at 9am and take you directly to our hotel in Ocean City, and then bring you back again at 12pm on Thursday. The bus ride is FREE, but you must SIGN UP in order to reserve your seat(s). You may sign up for a seat on the bus during the dates and times listed below.

Hotel
Students are responsible for hotel costs while at the beach; however, we have arranged an incredible deal for you with the Atlantic Oceanfront Inn, centrally located on the beach and just a minutes’ walk away from Seacrets and other destinations. We have reserved a block of rooms for either $69 or $89 per night. All rooms come with two queen beds and a queen sleep sofa. If you choose to put three people in a room for two nights, each person will pay no more than ~$30/night. If you choose to sleep six to a room for the two nights, each person will pay no more than ~$15 per night. Students may NOT sleep more than 6 people to a room.

The room options are as follows:
• Standard view rooms with 2 queen beds and a queen sleep sofa -$69.00/per night
• Ocean view rooms with 2 queens and a queen sleep sofa -$69.00/per night
• Ocean patio rooms (1st floor/dune level) -2 queens and a queen sleep sofa
• Oceanfront rooms -2nd floor or above -2 queens and a queen sleep sofa -$89.00/per night
All rooms are equipped with: FREE WiFi, complimentary coffee & juice in the room adjacent to the front desk, fully equipped kitchens, and free on-site parking.

To reserve a room, please call the hotel's toll free reservation's line at 1-800-641-0011 to make your reservations. You will need to let the reservationist know that you are calling to make reservations for WCL at the Atlantic Oceanfront Inn. You will be asked to provide a credit card for a deposit of the first night/plus tax when making your reservation.

THESE ROOMS WILL NOT BE HELD INDEFINITELY, SO PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS ASAP. If you fail to call within the next few days, you may be asked to pay full price for your stay.

Activities


Last Bar Review
Our last bar review will be held in Ocean City at Seacrets, the largest bar on the East Coast, on Tuesday, May 14th. Details on drink specials will be communicated closer to the event. Like all other Bar Reviews, the cost of drinks will be the responsibility of the drinker.

All You Can Eat Crab Feast
Join us for a true Maryland Style Crab Feast at Higgin’s Crabs on Wednesday, May 15th! After a nice day on the beach, come share a meal with friends and classmates. The meal will include unlimited steamed Maryland crabs, fried chicken, fries, coleslaw, corn on the cob, hush puppies, and soft drinks. Any other beverages may be purchased separately.

Tickets for this event are FREE and first come first serve; the SBA will pay for up to 120 students to enjoy this feast.* Tickets for this event will be available in person on the dates listed below until sold out. Students will be limited to buying one ticket, or a maximum of two tickets if bringing a significant other. STUDENTS MAY NOT RESERVE TICKETS FOR OTHER STUDENTS. If we run out of free tickets, students may buy tickets for $35.50.


*Only WCL students and spouses/partners may get free tickets to the all you can eat crab feast. Friends are welcome to attend, but must pay $35.50 for their ticket.

Friday, May 17th – Wine Tasting


Come along with us to Maryland wine country on Friday, May 17th for a tour of Linganore Winery and a wine and food tasting. Buses will depart from the Tenleytown metro around 10am and take you right to the door of the winery, where we have arranged for a tour and tasting for up to 110 students. The tasting will incorporate ~15 wines, select cheese, and chocolates. You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy after your tasting on the patio or lawn. Buses for this event will leave around between 2-3pm after you have had time to enjoy yourselves.


Tickets for this event will cost $10 and are first come, first serve. The ticket price includes transportation, tour, and tasting. Additional purchases at the winery are the responsibility of the buyer. Tickets for this event will be available for purchase in person on the dates listed below until sold out. Students will be limited to buying one ticket, or a maximum of two tickets if bringing a significant other. STUDENTS MAY NOT BUY TICKETS FOR OTHER STUDENTS.


Saturday, May 18th - Open Top Bus Tour of DC

Bring your family and friends along on a 3-hour, narrated tour of our Nation’s Capitol! Open top tour buses will leave from the Tenleytown metro at noon on Saturday and will take you on a customized tour around DC. Tour takers will have the opportunity to get off the tour bus half-way through the tour to continue exploring on their own, or remain on the bus which will bring them back to the Tenleytown metro by approximately 3pm.


Tickets for this event are FREE for students ($5 for friends and family) and first come first serve. Tickets for this event will be available in person on the dates listed below until sold out. Students will be limited to purchasing four tickets. STUDENTS MAY NOT BUY TICKETS FOR OTHER STUDENTS.

Tickets for these events will be available for reservation or purchase IN PERSON ONLY. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THIS POLICY. Representatives from the Graduation Week Committee will be in the lobby during the following days and times to help you sign up for these events:


• Monday, April 22: 3pm - 10pm
• Tuesday, April 23: 3pm - 10pm
• Wednesday, April 24: 3pm - 8pm
• Thursday, April 25: 3pm - 7:30pm
• Sunday, April 27: 1pm - 7pm

You must have your AU ID (or at least your number) with you when purchasing tickets. We will only take cash; please do not come with a credit card or check.
