Student Bar Association Quarterly Report from SBA President Adam Cohen & Vice President Jon Feere
At the start of the new semester, we feel it is appropriate to update you on what the SBA has accomplished for WCL, what we've been working on, and what's in store in the months ahead...
Accomplishments
- Commenced renovations to the 6th floor lounge to provide a casual, yet professional setting in which to congregate and converse.
- Successfully advocated the extension of the school's Add/Drop period to allow students to fully survey courses and relieve students of making a rushed judgment as to whether a course meets their expectations.
- Improved the SBA Mentor-Mentee program to ensure a smooth transition to the law school experience for a record number of first-year student participants.
- Developed an online system that institutionalizes organizational knowledge, facilitates communication among student leaders, and ensures organizational continuity for years to come.
- Represented WCL's interests throughout the investigation and termination of AU President Ben Ladner.
- Led a fundraising effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina that yielded nearly $5,000, an amount larger than any other Washington, DC law school despite a smaller student body.
- Sold out the SBA Golf Classic for the 1st time in the event's 10-year history, raising over $17,000 for WCL.
- Increased WCL membership in the American Bar Association by nearly 20%.
- And making sure the student community's voice was heard on countless other issues...
What We're Working On
- Advocating for a course waiting list to accommodate students when high-demand courses are full.
- Working with the Administration to better market WCL students and the institution itself.
- Creating a more user-friendly Docket that allows students to navigate directly to the events in which they are most interested.
- Developing an organizational reporting system that helps WCL Administrators help us by keeping them informed of prospective employers and donors coming into the law school as event panelists so that they are placed in the best position to develop and cultivate these relationships on students' behalf.
- Working with the Office of Career Services to coordinate career-related panels that best prepare students for the future.
- Establishing an annual SBA lecture series that examines contemporary issues of national prominence, and more...
