Description

Whether Constitutional Law, Employment Law, Civil Rights, Feminist Jurisprudence, or Family Law, the issue of personhood is relevant yet often under examined given the time constraints in larger sections. This seminar is designed to give students an opportunity to more deeply explore themes of personhood that may have arose in other courses. The course is organized around four themes: Personhood, Self Possession, Property Interests, Ownership interests. Students are asked to contextualize the four themes using various cultural phenomena. Previous years’ cultural context/phenomena included slavery, body part donations, professional sports, euthanasia, sexuality and abortion. This year’s cultural context is Protest. We will examine the relationship between protest activities and the four pillars of ownership (Personhood, Self Possession, Property Interests, and Ownership Interests). Following a survey of writings on personhood and review of famous/infamous protests, we will explore the role and utility of protest in various claims ownership claims such as slavery, labor, sex and sexuality, marriage, abortion and reproduction related activities and technology The materials and readings in each section will be drawn from a wide variety of disciplines in order to give students the widest possible lens to consider these complex issues. Students are evaluated based on a series of reflection papers and, field study and class participation.
