Description

This course covers an array of topics involving relationship between law and creativity, the nature of authorship, the interrelationship between exclusive rights and the public interest, and the effect of new technologies on copyright. Readings will include primary and secondary source materials on some of today’s liveliest copyright controversies – issues that practitioners in the field now confront on a daily basis. Classroom sessions will involve discussions, mock hearings and student advocacy on topics including remixing music and videos, digital rights management and the DMCA, fair use, the restoration of copyright for foreign authors, the liability of user-generated content sites, and music infringement. Students will prepare research papers of publishable quality on topics of their choice with guidance, feedback and supervision by the professor, and course grades will be based primarily on these papers.
