Description

This class builds on the study of the laws and regulations from the Law of Nonprofits and consists of weekly drafting exercises designed to teach students skills and practices useful for the representation and leadership of nonprofit organizations. Exercises include: drafting bylaws, drafting applications for tax exemption, developing key governance policies, evaluating business forms for commercial activities, evaluating political activities and more. Central to the class is an interdisciplinary exercise that involves meeting several times during the semester with students at the American University School of International Service social enterprise program to work collaboratively to resolve (simulated) legal issues arising in a new social enterprise. To take this course, you must co-register with Law of Nonprofit Organizations (LAW 852-001).
