Description

Ethical dilemmas routinely confront practitioners who represent immigrants, but the dilemmas also present opportunities for reform. This research seminar will examine how and why working with immigrants can be ethically unique, considering the stakes involved for clients and the complexity in the laws that need to be considered. The course will pay special attention to what competence, zealous advocacy and other ethics rules mean in the places where immigration status intersects with other areas of law (family law, employment law, criminal law). We will examine the ethical questions arising from current immigration structures and practices, thinking both about what the rules of professional conduct offer us as guidance, as well as the broader ethical imperatives of reform.
