Description

This is a 2 to 5 credit experiential learning course that will be taught in Spring 2014 on Tuesdays from 10:00 AM-11:50 AM entitled “International Criminal Law & Procedure: Theory and Practice”. The course is intended to expose students to the theory and practice of international criminal law and procedure, and to engage students in real-life projects dealing with the investigation and prosecution of serious international crimes, such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

This page is for the 2 credit seminar (LAW-795CL-001). In addition to this, students will have the option of enrolling in a 3-credit fieldwork/practicum component of the course (LAW-795CL-001B), working on projects undertaken in partnership with organizations involved in the investigation and prosecution of serious international crimes, such as international and internationalized courts and tribunals; domestic courts with jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute serious international crimes; and government offices, inter- or non-governmental groups working in support of the investigation or prosecution of such crimes. Under close supervision of the professor, students will learn substantive law and develop some of the critical research, writing and advocacy skills necessary to practice in this rapidly evolving field.

There are no prerequisites; however, prior or concurrent enrollment in International Law, International Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure or Evidence is recommended. Seminar enrollment will be limited to 15 students. The fieldwork/practicum component of the course will be limited to 8 students. Students wishing to participate in the fieldwork/practicum component of the course will be asked to apply to enroll.

To apply for the practicum, students should send the professor a resume and short statement of interest to warcrimes@wcl.american.edu, including why there are interested in participating in the course and a summary of relevant academic and/or professional experiences. This might be followed by a short interview if necessary.

Please note that if you would like to enroll in the fieldwork/practicum component of the course you must sign up for the seminar.
