Description

Note: Meets 06/01-06/05 -- Intellectual property (IP) is one important mechanism that governs the intersections among environmental sustainability, technological innovation and knowledge policy. We begin by framing the issues, situating them within the broader global governance framework and introducing some of the most relevant international institutions and agreements. That context provides the basis for exploration of a series of thematic subtopics. What is the role of IP in conserving or sharing the benefits of biodiversity? How does IP operate to restrict or enable access to plants’ genetic resources for food and agriculture? Are Western notions of IP compatible with the environmental and social norms governing indigenous peoples throughout the world? Does IP facilitate the transfer of clean technologies from developed to developing countries? Can developing countries claim to have fundamental rights of access to such technologies? And to conclude, how are international institutions and actors coordinating responses to sustainable development challenges? Students will have the opportunity to provoke debate by posing orienting questions at the outset of each meeting and engaging in interactive classroom discussion throughout. Grades will be determined by responses to a multifaceted, take-home examination, to be administered in the weeks immediately following completion of the course. Cross listed with Environment Law Summer Sessions.
