Description

This seminar examines current high priority areas in development aid and the legal issues that arise in connection with them. No prior knowledge of development or development law is required.

The seminar will begin with a general review of the meaning of development and the role of the World Bank in development. Drawing upon the expertise of a number of guest speakers, we will then examine the legal and policy aspects of development and specific issues, such as; the rule of law, post-conflict assistance, debt relief, protection of indigenous peoples and the protection of women. We will also review the legal issues that arise in building collaborations between donors of development aid and the different types of legal instruments used to provide international development aid.

By the end of the seminar, students should be familiar with the most important issues in development today and understand the role of the lawyer in helping to address those issues.

Final class grades will be based on a seminar paper, an in-term oral presentation and class participation. Class attendance is mandatory.

Class readings will be based on a package of course materials available at the WCL bookstore and supplementary materials that will be distributed in class from time to time.

Class size is limited to 15 students.
