REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

Description

This seminar is open to students who are doing fieldwork in the areas of intellectual property, communications and technology. Externships can include positions in courts, federal agencies, trade associations, non-profits, public interest organizations, in-house positions, etc. The seminar will explore some of the roles lawyers play in the various practice settings in these dynamic fields. Simulations will be used to explore various aspects of lawyering in this area, the public interest dimensions of these fields, as well as the pragmatic and personal challenges inherent in the transition from student to lawyer. This seminar will provide students with an opportunity to engage in critical reflection about the legal profession, their own future legal careers, and their priorities and values as lawyers practicing in these fields.
