This is a three-credit, graded seminar. It is taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit, court, government organization, or a private law firm doing pro bono work. This course is designed to aid you in maximizing your externship experience and to encourage you to think about life as a lawyer. We will discuss what it means to be a lawyer and the lawyer’s role in society. Our topics will include professional obligations, ethical obligations, client relationships, and office dynamics. We will also discuss professionalism and the challenges you will face as a legal professional. We will also discuss how you will maintain a proper balance between your work and personal life. Because this is a Long Distance seminar, we will also discuss issues unique to your externships. Different jurisdictions offer different ethical rules, different workplace cultures and of course different laws. This class will aid you in identifying and navigating these challenges.
