IMPORTANT: This seminar is ONLY for students who have already taken a three credit seminar. This is a one credit class. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

Description

This course is one-credit pass/fail seminar taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit organization, government agency, court or private law firm handling pro bono matters exclusively. Through lectures, active classroom discussion, student journals, professional development exercises, and a select group of assigned readings, students will have the opportunity not only to reflect thoughtfully on the dynamics of their externship experiences and to discuss substantive legal issues, but they will also be challenged to constructively reflect upon any challenges faced in the workplace, with an emphasis on strategizing positive outcomes from a career development standpoint. Issues including work-life balance, career goal setting and accomplishment, the realities of legal practice, networking strategies, management skills for lawyers, and career entrepreneurship are some of the specific topics to be discussed in class.
