IMPORTANT: CLASS WILL MEET IN SMALL GROUPS FOR AN EXTRA HOUR EVERY OTHER WEEK. The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.
Description
This is a three credit class to be taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit organization, government agency, court or private law firm handling pro bono matters exclusively. Externship seminars provide students with an opportunity to engage in critical reflection about the legal profession, their own future legal careers, and their priorities and values as lawyers in conjunction with their field placement experiences. The course is designed to prepare students for the transition out of law school and into a successful legal career. In particular students will develop a job plan that will allow them to use the externship experience to help obtain a full time position. The professor will work with each student individually to improve their resume, draft writing samples and develop a set of contacts through their externship and previous experiences. For students who have secured full time employment post-graduation, the professor will work with those students to develop specific skills needed for their future employment. In addition, the course will cover preparing for the bar exam, responding to ethical dilemmas, negotiation, oral advocacy, interviewing skills and communication in the workplace as well as how to advocate for changes in legal policy in the specific legal environment of each student’s externship.
