Description

Reflecting on Legal Practice: Externship Seminar. This seminar is open to students who are externing at all different types of placements – courts, state and federal agencies, non-profits, pro bono offices in law firms, prosecution or other law enforcement offices, public defender offices, etc. The more diverse the placements, the more enriched our classroom discussions will be since the learning in this seminar centers around peer to peer sharing. In this course, we will explore the meaning of being a lawyer and a member of the legal profession. We will think about the variety of roles lawyers may have and the wide range of experiences available to persons with law degrees. We will explore the lawyer-client relationship in different public interest settings, as well as the interpersonal and self advocacy skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. We will also carefully examine the ethical obligations of lawyers and how they play out in various practice settings. Finally, we will consider the personal priorities and values that guide career choices and how to be fulfilled and maintain a healthy balance in one’s career in the law. The format of the class is very discussion-based and will include several simulations and guest speakers from different practice areas.
