Description

This is a three-credit, graded seminar. It is taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit, court, government organization, or a private law firm doing pro bono work. In this course, we will explore the meaning of being a lawyer and a member of the legal profession. We will discuss way in which law students and lawyers manage their legal careers including professionalism, networking, and skills development. We will explore the lawyer-client relationship in various work settings, as well as the skills and tools required for being successful in the workplace. We will also examine the intersection of the ethical obligations of lawyers with the commitment to zealous representation in various practice settings. Finally, we will consider how to be fulfilled and maintain a healthy balance in one’s career in the law. The course is open to all students in externship field placements and the format of the class will be discussion-based and include simulations, role-plays, and guest speakers. NOTE: Students Externing at Gary Gilbert's Office should NOT take this seminar due to a potential conflict of interest between the professor and the organization. Please enroll in a different seminar if you are externing there.
