Description

This survey course covers marriage, divorce, child custody, spousal support, property division, state intervention in the family, and families and parentage outside of marriage. There is an emphasis on constitutional doctrine affecting families. There are no course prerequisites, but students who have not taken Constitutional Law should speak to the professor at the beginning of the semester.

Textbooks and Other Materials

The textbook information on this page was provided by the instructor. Students should use this information when considering purchases from the AU Campus Store or other vendors. Students may check to determine if books are currently available for purchase online.

The casebook for this course is Weisberg and Appleton, MODERN FAMILY LAW: Cases and Materials, FIFTH EDITION. Do not buy an earlier edition of the casebook! (I used this edition in Fall 2013 so you may find it used from my Fall Family Law students)

First Class Readings

Read from the casebook pages 133-147: The Supreme Court speaks: interracial couples, “deadbeat” parents, and prisoners.
