Textbooks and Other Materials

The textbook information on this page was provided by the instructor. Students should use this information when considering purchases from the AU Campus Store or other vendors. Students may check to determine if books are currently available for purchase online.

First Class Readings

REQUIRED: For the first class, read D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct, Rules 1.1 - 1.6. Also prepare Student Photo-Information Sheet with biographical information and photo (can be copy of your student ID photo) for submission to Professor Berenson at first class. For an example of what the Student Photo-Information Sheet should contain, please see the sample in Section labeled "VIII Miscellaneous" of Volume III of the Supplemental Reading Materials.

OPTIONAL, BUT RECOMMENDED: K. Hegland, Introduction to the Study and Practice of Law In a Nutshell, 5th Ed.(West, St. Paul 2008). We will not discuss this book directly in class; however, I believe it is of great use to those who are not familiar with common law analysis techniques and is a good simplification and synthesis of those techniques for those who are. The entire book will assist you greatly in reading the other materials assigned in this class and in your other classes. If it is not yet available in the bookstore, ask the store to order it for you. You may also purchase the 3rd Edition (2000) or 4th edition (2003) used. The changes are minimal between the three. If you do so, read
