Once Upon a Time
Written by Larry Laye
(To the tune of "Many Moons Ago" from Once Upon a Mattress)

Once upon a time in some far off lands
Lived a pretty girl who had filthy hands
'Cause she worked and scrubbed all day

You can't wear nice clothes and you'll have no pearls
Said the wicked stepmother and her girls
As they watched her dream away

But a dream can be a wonderful thing
As wonderful and wondrous as a rainbow in spring
You can ask a dreamer not to dream, but that won't really do
For a dreamer's dream dreaming, is how a wish comes true

Came the postman next, to the house one fall,
with an invitation, 'twas for a ball
That the prince had planned to throw
So the girl looked up, to the evening sky
She shed many tears from each wistful eye
And she prayed that she could go

Spoken: I will grant your wish, a spirit said
You'll wear frilly clothes, and lovely jewels upon your head

Sung: And a pair of dainty slippers you will wear upon your feet
Get your tootsies home by midnight or it's bare foot on the street

Well the young girl went, oh you've heard the plot
And she met the prince, and they danced a lot
But she had to rush away

And the prince saw then that she'd lost a shoe
And he searched the kingdom, for you know who
"Be my bride," they heard him say

And the people shouted quietly "hurray!"

Oh a dream can be a wonderful thing
As wonderful and wondrous as a rainbow in spring
You can ask a dreamer not to dream, but that won't really do
For a dreamer's dream dreaming, is how a wish comes true
