The Invitation

Written by Larry Kaye
(To the tune of "One Brick at a Time" from Barnum)

We’re here to announce to everyone
A fete at 4801
For students and professors under stress

If you’ve a sense of rhythm child
And like to get a little wild
Just step into a doublet or a dress

And come downtown, now you’re in, with an invitation
You can dance at the Barrister’s Ball
Fun’s not a sin, says the proclamation
Take a spin, hear ye one, hear ye all

You and a date, don’t be late
Arthur Murray’s waiting
Don’t say "no" there’s no debating
You’ll be there, I’m stating
Take a chance, pay the dough,
Find romance when you go, I’ll see you at
the Barrister’s Ball

The one event that’s really neat
Where all the best professors meet
the students, who are putting off their work

There’s Spragens, Jaszi, Raskin too
Nell Newton, Bernie Corr, it’s true!
There’s even Robert Vaughan and Barlow Burke,

Mix with the creme de la creme with an invitation
For a night at the Barrister’s Ball
Fox Trot and Waltz, it’s a combination
You can try with your girl in the hall.
One magic night, all is right,
And your hearts are singing
Cupid’s arrows are a-zinging,
Wedding bells are ringing

Take a chance, it’s the best
Come and dance, with the rest of all the town
The Barrister’s Ball

Just take your foot and place it on the floor
Now that you’ve put it down take one step more
You hear the beat, you see it’s not so tough
Now don’t retreat, although the rhythm’s rough
Your breath comes fast, you’re spinning faster still
You try to stop, maybe you never will
You glow and slow, is this a new romance?
The answer’s at the dance tonight
