The
Digest Project (In Spanish Only)
The Inter-American Human Rights Digest Project publishes a jurisprudential repertoire
of the Inter-American System for the protection and promotion of human rights.
The Digest consists of excerpts selected primarily from decisions, reports,
and resolutions from the Inter-American Commission and Court. These excerpts
are indexed and analyzed according to the terms of the American Convention on
Human Rights and the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man.
The authors of the Digest are:
The Project was founded by the Netherlands Ministry of Development and Cooperation.
The Digest's European Counterpart
The Inter-American Digest Project is modeled after the Digest of Strasbourg
Case-Law. The Digest of Strasbourg Case-Law, established by the Netherlands
Institute of Human Rights (SIM) in cooperation with the Directorate of Human
Rights of the Council of Europe, provides a complete compilation of the Strasbourg
organ's case-law, analyzed according to the text of the European Convention
on Human Rights and its Protocols.
The Digest's Audience
The Inter-American Digest allows member states, petitioners, and other users
to research any particular aspect of law either by reference to the Table of
Contents under a particular article, or by reference to a Subject Matter Index.
The Digest is available in hard-copy, on cd-rom, and through the Internet, in
both Spanish and English.
The Inter-American Digest directly benefits the rule of law by providing a legal
research resource essential to improving the consistency, efficiency, and accessibility
of the Inter-American System. It helps to ensure uniformity and transparency
in the jurisprudence of the Commission and the Court. It is also instrumental
in creating awareness of the Inter-American system both in this hemisphere and
in the international community in general.
The Inter-American Human Rights System
The Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights has worked to protect
and promote fundamental human rights for five decades. The Inter-American System
consists of an integration of the two main international bodies in the Organization
of American States (OAS): the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and
the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The Commission and the Court produce
documented, although no systematized, records of their case law.
Inter-American
Human Rights Database
The Inter-American Human Rights Database contains documents in English and Spanish
adopted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights since its first session,
celebrated in 1960. Given the increasing need to accede to the case law of this
body, our initial efforts have been concentrated in making the reports on individual
cases available to the general public. Also, we have posted the reports on sessions
corresponding to the first years of work of the Commission. Furthermore, the
Database will include special country reports and thematic reports adopted by
the Commission since its inception.
