PIJIP Research Paper: A Pragmatic Approach to Intellectual Property and Development – A Case Study of the Jordanian Copyright Law in the Internet Age

This article takes the copyright law in Jordan as a case study and shows how, in practical terms, a pro-development-oriented approach could be implemented in the copyright laws of developing countries. It provides specific recommendations for developing countries to ensure that their IP laws are aligned with and serve their social and economic development objectives.

International Intellectual Property Summer Program Open for Registration

Registration is now open for the American University Washington College of Law Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property Summer Program in International Intellectual Property. Courses are offered in Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland, for both academic and CLE credit. Courses examine the recent shift of intellectual property law making and enforcement to the international level, and the skills in legal analysis and forum selection that intellectual property lawyers need as a result.

Professor Jorge Contreras Cited in New York Times Article

American University Washington College of Law professor Jorge Contreras was cited as "the leading authority on standard-setting patents" in a recent New York Times article on Microsoft's lawsuit against Motorola mobility, "which accuses Motorola of breaching its obligation to offer standard-essential patents on fair and resonable licensing terms." A recent bench ruling by Judge James Robart in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, which granted Microsoft a temporary restrianing order and preliminary injuction, in turn preventing Motorola Mobility from enforcing the pending German injuction that would bar Microsoft from Selling Windows and Xbox in Germany.

The session will address curriculum recommendations for students entering their second year. WCL Professors Organize Letter on U.S.-Colombia FTA Implementation Bill

This morning, a letter organized by WCL professors Peter Jaszi, Michael Carroll and Sean Flynn, and signed by nearly 70 international intellectual property academics and experts, was sent to the Colombian legislature “in response to what we perceive as a hurried process to implement the provisions of the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement through amendments to Colombian law that may not fully take into account the importance of balance in a healthy copyright system.”
