Intellectual Property Writing Contests

American Bar Association Health Law Section Annual Writing Competition

The Health Law Section is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Law Student Writing Competition. The winner will be introduced at the Section's Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law conference February 20-22, 2008 in San Diego. The award will include publication in The Health Lawyer; a $500 honorarium, and airfare (at ABA rates), hotel for two nights and a $50 per diem for two days to attend the Emerging Issues conference. A second place winner may be named if deemed appropriate.

The second place winner will also be published in The Health Lawyer. No cash or travel award will be presented to the second place winner.

American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law Jan Jancin Award

The Jan Jancin Competition includes three separate awards offered to law students nominated by their schools who have excelled in the study of intellectual property law. The first award is the Jan Jancin Award, which includes a cash award of $5,000. The second award has been established by the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Virginia State Bar for Spring 2007. The winner will receive a $4,000 cash award. The third award has been established by the Past Presidents of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. The winner will receive a $2,500 cash award.

American Bar Association Section of Business Law Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest

The American Bar Association Section of Business Law is sponsoring its 22nd annual Mendes Hershman student writing contest to encourage and reward law student writings on a business law subject of general and current interest.

American College of Legal Medicine Student Writing Competition

Every year, the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) presents a Award in each of the following categories, for the outstanding original paper on Legal Medicine:

  • The Schwartz Award to a Medical Student
  • The Letourneau Award to a Law Student
  • The Hirsh Award to a Dentistry, Podiatry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Science, Health Care Administration, or Public Health Student

American Intellectual Property Law Association

The AIPLA Quarterly Journal selects its Publication Staff through a competition held each year in the spring. Students who have two full academic years remaining in an ABA-accredited law school, e.g. first-year full-time J.D. candidates or second-year part-time J.D. candidates, are eligible to compete. The Publication Staff's responsibilities are similar to that of members on other student-run journals and are coordinated by several student editors, selected each year from among the first-year Publication Staff.

American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation (AIPLEF) Sidney B. Williams Jr. Scholarship

The first initiative of the AIPLEF has been the establishment of the Sidney B. Williams, Jr. Intellectual Property Law Scholarships. The goal of these scholarships is to increase the number of under-represented minority groups serving as intellectual property law practitioners in law firms and the intellectual property law departments in corporations. Since April 2002, the AIPLEF has been awarding a number of $10,000 Scholarships for Minority Scholars as well as arranging internships and mentorships to assist under-represented minority law school students intending practice intellectual property law. The scholarships are named in honor of Sidney B. Williams, Jr. who was the first African-American to hold major leadership roles in both the AIPLA and the ABA-IPL Section and who has and continues to give countless hours and boundless energies to influence minority students looking for a future in science and engineering to pursue law school and intellectual property law. He is a role model for all young lawyers.

American Intellectual Property Law Association Fellows Award

To be presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, the AIPLA Fellows Award of $2,000 is awarded to the author of best article relating to: “Issues relating to the protection of business methods." Articles must be original and written between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008, and must not have been published prior to submission.

American Intellectual Property Law Association Robert C. Watson Writing Award

To be presented on October 24, 2008 at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, the Watson Award of $2,000 is awarded to the author of best article on a subject relating to the protection of intellectual property written or published between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.

American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) Nathan Burkan Competition on Copyright Law

This competition is open to all third-year students at accredited law schools. (At the discretion of the dean, second-year students may also compete. However, second-year students who receive awards may not compete in their third year.) Papers on any aspect of Copyright Law may be submitted. The prizes will be awarded to the eligible students who shall, in the sole judgment of the dean, or such other person or committee as the dean may designate, prepare the two best papers. The dean may, in his or her discretion, withhold the awards entirely, if in his or her opinion no worthy paper is submitted, or may award only the first or second prize. Students are not eligible for more than one prize in any Competition.

Berkeley Technology Law Journal Comment Competition

First prize of $1,000, second prize of $750, and third prize of $500 for the best student papers that address some aspect of the law that implicates technology in any degree. Topics may include (but are not limited to) internet law, multimedia law, patent law, biotechnology, chemistry, engineering, environmental law, computer software, and genetics. Each author submitting a paper must grant the Journal a right of first refusal to publish the submission. Submissions will be judged anonymously. Epstein Becker & Green, P.C Annual Health Law Writing Competition

Epstein Becker & Green, P.C., a national firm engaged in the practice of health care and life sciences law, is pleased to announce its Tenth Annual Health Care and Life Sciences Law Writing Competition. The competition is designed to encourage the preparation of scholarly papers on current topics of interest relating to health law. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows for the three best papers: First Place $4,000; Second Place $2,000; and Third Place $500. Students should take advantage of the fact that health law is a very broad and diverse field, encompassing aspects of almost every area of law. Papers may address any traditional area of the law as applied to health care (e.g., antitrust, tax, corporate), or areas of law unique to health care (e.g., fraud and abuse, managed care, Medicare/Medicaid, clinical trials). Entries in the top twenty percent will be considered for publication in the Annals of Health Lawpublished by the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Foley & Lardner LLP is on the forefront of intellectual property law, and actively committed to promoting scholarly research and writing. We are proud to sponsor the Eighth Annual Intellectual Property Writing Competition with prizes totaling $15,000 for papers addressing intellectual property topics, such as patents, copyrights, domain names, trademarks, computer law, and trade secret law. Food and Drug Law Institute H. Thomas Austern Memorial Writing Competitions

The Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) sponsors the Writing Competitions to encourage law students interested in the areas of law that affect foods, drugs, devices, cosmetics, and biologics. Winning papers will be considered for publication in the Food and Drug Law Journal. There are two competitions—one for papers with a maximum of 40 pages, and one for papers between 41 and 100 pages. Papers longer than 100 pages will not be accepted. Two prizes will be awarded for each of the two competitions). 1st place—$1,500 / 2nd place—$1,000

FoxKiser Annual Writing Competition in Law, Science & Medicine

The FoxKiser Annual Writing Competition in Law, Science & Medicine selects two papers each year on any issue related to law, science and medicine. The first-prize winner receives $4,000. The second-prize winner receives $1,000. The competition is open to all students currently enrolled, including students graduating in this academic year.

Grammy Foundation Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

This competition awards a $5,000 first prize to the best student paper of 3000 words or less on a compelling issue facing the music industry. The awards are presented in conjunction with the annual Grammy Awards, and the winner receives transportation to Los Angeles and a ticket to the Grammys.

 IQsensato Research Awards

Essays are invited on the topic: “The policy and practical impact of the WIPO Development
Agenda in developing countries”. The contest is open to students who are nationals of developing countries. Cash prizes of €1,000, €750, and €500 will be awarded.

Journal of Intellectual Property at the Chicago-Kent College of Law

A cash prize of $250, and publication in the Journal, is available for the best student paper addressing issues raised by recent intellectual property reform legislation.

Ladas Memorial Award

The purpose of the Ladas Memorial Award is to provide an incentive to further develop interest in the field of trademarks and to enhance the general understanding of this discipline. The Competition is open to all U.S. and international students, practitioners and academics interested in trademarks and trademark law. The Ladas Award carries with it a US $2,000 cash award and a set of Stephen P. Ladas’ three-volume treaties. Award winners are also invited to attend the 2008 INTA Gala in Berlin, Germany at INTA’s 130th Annual Meeting. At the Gala, the winner will be recognized before the outstanding volunteers and leaders of the Association. The student winner will receive a travel and lodging stipend of up to US $1,000 to attend the Gala.

Larry M. Simonsmeier Award in Pharmacy Law

The American Society for Pharmacy Law (ASPL) is a national organization of attorneys, pharmacists, and others interested in pharmacy law. ASPL recognizes outstanding scholarship related to pharmacy law with the Simonsmeier Award sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Insurance. The 2008 Award will provide an honorarium plus support for travel to the ASPL Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in San Diego, CA, March 14 - 17, 2008. The Award, named in honor of Larry Simonsmeier, former editor of Rx Ipsa Loquitur, the ASPL’s official publication, recognizes an outstanding paper relating to the interests of the Society published during the prior two years.

Los Angeles County Bar Association Intellectual Property & Entertainment Law Section Writing Competition

A prize of $1000 and publication in COMM/ENT, the Hastings Journal of Communications and Entertainment Law are offered to the author of the best paper on a topic in entertainment law, including copyright, the First Amendment, antitrust, labor and employment law, and tax and securities law. The competition is open to second and third-year law students and to candidates for LL.M. degrees. Entries must be submitted to the Dean of the law school for review. Up to two articles per law school may be submitted by the Dean to the competition.

New York State Bar Association Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section

Law students, take note of this publishing and scholarship opportunity: The Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association (EASL), in partnership with BMI, the world’s largest music performing rights organization, has established the Phil Cowan Memorial/BMI Scholarship! Created in memory of Cowan, an esteemed entertainment lawyer and a former Chair of EASL, the Phil Cowan Memorial/BMI Scholarship fund offers up to two awards of $2,500 each on an annual basis in Phil Cowan’s memory to a law student who is committed to a practice concentrating in one or more areas of entertainment, art or sports law.

NYIPLA William C. Conner Intellectual Property Writing Competition

First prize of $1,000 and a runner-up prize of $500 for papers in the "traditional subject areas of intellectual property, i.e., patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair trade practices and antitrust." Sponsored by the New York Intellectual Property Law Association.

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology Biennial Writing Competition

The Richmond Journal of Law & Technology Biennial Writing Competition is open to all full-time law students and will provide a forum for exploring cutting-edge issues applicable to areas in which technology and the law intersect. Students may write on any law and technology topic, including, but not limited to, biotechnology, intellectual property, patent and trademark, and the Internet. The grand prize winner will receive a $1,200 cash award and will be published in a 2008 issue of JOLT. The second place winner will receive a $600 cash award and 2,000 WestlawRewards points. The third place winner will receive a $100 cash award and 2500 LexisNexis points. Additionally, every entrant will receive 150 LexisNexis points!

Santa Clara University School of Law Computer & High Technology Law Journal Student Writing Competition

First prize of $2,000, second prize of $1,500 and third prize of $1,000 for the best papers by U.S. law students on "Hot Topics in Intellectual Property and Technology Law." The comment awarded first prize will also receive an offer of publication in Volume 22 of the Journal.

Stanford Technology Law Review Paper Contest

Prizes: $1000 (1st place), $500 (2nd place), $250 (3rd place). Eligibility: Open to all J.D. Candidates and recent graduates. Specs: Papers must be no more than 50 pp. double-spaced with single-spaced footnotes.

Virginia State Bar Intellectual Property Section

The Intellectual Property Section of the Virginia State Bar is offering a $4,000 first prize and publication in Virginia Lawyer magazine to the best law student article relating to intellectual property issues or practice. The competition is limited to students at any Virginia law school and residents of Virginia attending law school outside the state.
