Sixteenth Comparative Summer Law Program in Europe

Academic Requirements

Students will be expected to complete assigned readings, attend and participate regularly in all scheduled classes and events, and successfully pass a final written examination for each course. The final grade will be based on the examination and also on attendance and participation.

Eligibility

Students who have completed one year of full-time or part-time law study and who are in good standing at an ABA-approved or state accredited law school may enroll in this program. The program is also open to LL.M. candidates and practicing lawyers.

When applying, non WCL students must provide a statement by their Dean or Registrar that they are in good standing and that they have permission to take these courses at WCL.

Daily Schedule

There will generally be one class period or up to two visits and briefings per day. Evenings will normally be free for individual activities and for taking advantage of the many cultural and recreational opportunities available in the countries visited.

Laptops

Bringing a laptop is each student's decision. Make sure that files have been backed up, that you bring a security cable and that you have insurance in case of loss or theft. In the hotels that the group will use there is normally free wireless access to the internet, so having a laptop may facilitate email and course related research. In some hotels it will be possible to secure laptops in the room safe. Laptops are permitted for use on exams. Students may be expected to provide a flash drive or CD to turn in their exam. Please bring a couple of CDs or flash drives with you.

Scholarship

A limited number of $500 merit-based scholarships are available to be used toward tuition costs. Deadline for application: March 8, 2010. To apply, enclose a one-page resume, a one-page statement of goals and objectives outlining what you plan to accomplish by participating, a brief financial statement addressing the aid you have received so far and that you have applied for and may receive for this program abroad and what resources of your own you are going to use to participate, and the most recent grade transcript.

Financial Aid

Students can apply for regular summer financial aid through WCL or their home schools. The WCL Financial Aid office can be contacted at: finaid@wcl.american.edu.

Non-WCL students should ask their Financial Aid office to send the "Consortium Agreement" to the attention of: Judy Amey, Financial Aid Office, Washington College of Law, 4801 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Suite 505, Washington, DC 20016-8187. Telephone: 202.274.4041. Fax: 202.274.4107. E-mail: jamey@wcl.american.edu

Insurance

International health and accident insurance coverage is provided by the program at no additional fee. The insurance coverage is paid for by WCL for the official program dates only. Further insurance coverage is solely the student's responsibility. The International Student ID card offers an international insurance plan. Some credit cards also do (e.g. American Express).
