The Society for Dispute Resolution (SDR) is a student organization dedicated to promoting student interest in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) at the Washington College of Law. SDR is unique among student organizations at WCL in that it functions both as an open student organization and as a competition team. Any enrolled student, JD or LLM, is welcome to join SDR. We also encourage faculty to become involved and help promote the expansion of ADR curriculum at WCL.
The general society of SDR serves to help students gain an understanding of and promote the use of ADR as an effective alternative to litigation. The group provides students with the opportunity to hear from prominent ADR experts and practitioners. SDR also hosts annual training sessions to introduce students to the theory and basic skills of domestic and international mediation, negotiation, and arbitration. SDR participates in events sponsored by ADR groups at other area law schools, the ABA Section for Dispute Resolution, and works closely with WCL's Center on International Commercial Arbitration. SDR also collaborates with various student organizations promoting dispute resolution techniques at American University's School of International Service.
SDR's competition team sends teams of students to participate in the ABA's mediation, arbitration, negotiation, and client counseling competitions. Teams also participate in the St. John's University ADR triathlon in New York and in the International Chamber of Commerce Commercial Mediation Competition in Paris, France. Team members are chosen annually through a spring qualifying tournament, typically in March. Membership is limited to JD students, although LLMs are welcome to participate as coaches.
