Alvina Reckman-Myers First Year Tournament Information
January 22, 23 & 28, 2005

Competition Director Abi Bamgboye; Finalists Mark Beeley, Jennifer Slagle; Final Round Judges: Professor Dan Marcus, Chief Judge Rufus King, III, and Judge Pamela Gray; Finalists Molly Hostetler, Paul Stern; Competition Director Vanessa Motley

Welcome competitors! Below are links to all the information you will need for the preparation of your oral argument. Please read thoroughly the competition rules and bylaws, as all competitors will be held responsible for the requirements and obligations set forth therein.

The competition problem is comprised of two lower court opinions, including relevant appendices, and an order granting certiorari. All contents of the problem have been combined into one document, which serves as the Joint Appendix or record. Keep in mind that although the lower court opinions address two separate issues, the Supreme Court only granted certiorari to review one of the issues, and this is the issue that will be argued throughout the competition.

Note that competitors are permitted and encouraged to review both parties' briefs in preparation for your argument. Note also that while competitors are not permitted to do any outside research, you may review any and all cases cited in the problem or either of the briefs.

Any questions regarding the competition or the information provided herein must be submitted to the competition directors, Abi Bamgboye and Vanessa Motley, at moot@wcl.american.edu.

Finalists Mark Beeley and Jennifer Slagle

Good luck!

If additional changes need to be made due to alterations in the number of competitors or the ratio of Petitioner to Respondent in any one round, ONLY THOSE PERSONS AFFECTED WILL BE NOTIFIED BY THE FIRST YEAR COMPETITION DIRECTORS.

Finalists Molly Hostetler and Paul Stern

Everyone will compete on Saturday, and only those advancing to the quarter-final, semi-final, and final rounds will return to compete on Sunday, January 23d and the following Friday, January 28th, 2005.

DRESS:
Appropriate dress for the competition is formal business attire; in other words, you should come dressed in a suit. You should treat this competition like any other formal court proceeding, and expect that both your dress and demeanor should reflect such professionalism.
