NIMJ Writing Awards

The Kevin J. Barry Writing Award for Excellence in Military Legal Studies

On March 5, 2009, NIMJ presented the 2008 Kevin J. Barry Award for Excellence in Military Legal Studies. This award honors an outstanding article published in a calendar year. It also honors an outstanding scholar and peerless advocate of reform: to the late Captain Kevin J. Barry, USCG (Ret). Kevin was a founder and director of NIMJ. The winning article for 2008 is by Professor Monica Hakimi, entitled "International Standards for Detaining Terrorism Suspects: Moving Beyond the Armed Conflict-Criminal Divide," published in the Yale Journal of International Law in the Summer 2008 volume. Professor Hakimi is an Assistant Professor of Law at University of Michigan Law School. The Honorable Mention went to Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Corn, US Army (retired), for "Bringing Discipline to the Civilianization of the Battlefield: A Proposal for a More Legitimate Approach to Resurrecting Military- Criminal Jurisdiction over Civilian Augmentees," published in the January 2008 volume of the University of Miami Law Review. Lieutenant Colonel Corn is an Associate Professor of Law at South Texas College of Law. The winner received a $250 prize and certificate. Congratulations to Professors Hakimi and Corn.

Rear Admiral John S. Jenkins Writing Award for Student Excellence in Military Legal Studies

NIMJ announces the winner of the first annual John S. Jenkins Award for Student Excellence in Military Legal Studies. This award honors an outstanding article written by a student during the 2008-2009 academic school year. This award also honors a leader of the military bar who was a co-founder of NIMJ, was the first chair of the Advisory Board, and was a Director of NIMJ for many years. Rear Admiral Jenkins served in the Navy for 28 years and was The Judge Advocate General of the Navy. The winning article for 2009 is by Ms. Laura Beth LeRoux, entitled "A Jus Post Bellum for the U.S. Military: Facilitating the International Legal debate on Post- Conflict Reconstruction." Laura is a student at William and Mary School of Law. Two Honorable Mention articles were awarded. Jordan Walerstein, a student at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, was selected for honorable mention for his article, “Coping with Combat Claims: An Analysis of the Foreign Claims Act’s Combat Exclusion.” Robert E. Murdough, a student at William and Mary School of Law, was selected for honorable mention for his article, “‘I Won’t Participate in an Illegal War’: Military Objectors, the Nuremberg Defense and the Obligation to Refuse Illegal Orders.” The winner received a $250 prize and certificate. Congratulations to Laura, Jordan and Robert.
