PIJIP and the IP Law Society to hold Intro to IP Session
PIJIP and the Intellectual Property Law Society will co-host "Intro to IP at WCL," an event to introduce new students to the intellectual property-related opportunities at WCL. IP faculty, staff and student leadership will introduce PIJIP's work and its fellowships and internships, the IP Law Society's networking events and other activities, the new WCL IP Brief, and the Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Clinic. The event will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at noon. MORE

Dean Grossman Visits Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP
Washington College of Law Dean Claudio Grossman, in conjunction with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, will host an alumni luncheon at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP, Tuesday, Sept. 1. The visit is part of the Dean's Firm Visit Program, which promotes continued excellence in legal education by engaging WCL alumni at law firms, and was coordinated by alumnus Richard Busca '81. WCL Welcomes New Law & Government Fellows
The Program on Law and Government at WCL is pleased to announce that William R. Yeomans and Steve Wermiel have joined the Program as fellows. Yeomans and Wermiel follow in the footsteps of other great Law and Government Fellows including Judge Abner Mikva, Senator John Culver and, most recently, former D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer. Dean's Advisory Council Meeting Hosted Tonight
The Dean's Advisory Council is comprised of alumni, donors, and friends of WCL. Chaired by graduate Kenneth Lore '73, tonight's meeting will give Council members the opportunity to be introduced to the newest faculty members of WCL. In addition, presentations will be made about the incoming student class and new programs for the 2009-10 academic year.

Lawyer Re-entry Program to Hold Information Sessions
The WCL Lawyer Re-entry Program will hold information sessions for the upcoming 2009 program on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 12 - 1 P.M. and from 5:30 - 6:30 P.M. in the JD Lounge. The sessions will give an overview of the program, which is geared toward helping lawyers re-enter the profession after time away. MORE

Professor Jamin Raskin to Present at Cato Institute Forum
Professor Jamin Raskin, director of WCL's Program on Law and Government, will participate in a first amendment policy forum at the Cato Institute, Sept. 8. Raskin, Bradley A. Smith, former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, and John Samples, director of the Center for Representative Government at the Cato Institute, will address "Citizens United Redux: The First Amendment Vindicated?" the day before the Citizens United v. FEC case is to be reargued before the U.S. Supreme Court, Sept. 9. Event registration is available on the Cato Institute site.

WCL Welcomes New Distinguished Faculty Members
Washington College of Law welcomes Michael Carroll, Anna Gelpern, Benjamin Leff, and Jayesh Rathod to the full-time faculty this fall, along with a total of 11 practitioners-in-residence, fellows, and visiting professors. WCL S.J.D. Program Graduate Nominated to Supreme Court of Uganda
S.J.D. graduate Dr. Esther Kisaakye '09 has been nominated to the seven member Ugandan Supreme Court by Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda. Over the course of her career, Kisaakye has worked to address human rights, women's rights, family law, health law, and HIV/AIDS and the law. She became the first African woman to graduate from the WCL S.J.D. Program in August, and her dissertation focused on the role of women judges and lawyers in Uganda's legal system. MORE

Human Rights Legal Education Project Completes Training in Bolivia
WCL's Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, through its Human Rights Legal Education Project, organized a series of activities in Bolivia to raise awareness on the importance of international human rights law and to increase the capacity of Bolivian law professors to teach this area of the law. Prof. Claudia Martin and Prof. Diego Rodriguez-Pinzon are principal investigators and Prof. Matias Hernandez is the coordinator of the project which is supported by the National Endowment for Democracy. WCL Holding "In My Backyard" Day of Service
WCL is holding its 7th annual In My Backyard (IMBY) service day devoted to getting involved with public service in the local Washington, D.C. neighborhoods. On Tuesday, August 18, more than 200 students, faculty, and staff will volunteer their services at a number of city organizations and non-profit groups. MORE

PIJIP's Michael Carroll Named as Center for Democracy & Technology Fellow
Professor Michael Carroll has been designated as a non-resident fellow at the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT). The program is designed to provide an opportunity for leading scholars to collaborate with CDT staff in addressing the complex legal and policy issues facing the Internet. "Each member of this distinguished group has already had substantial impact on Internet policy," said David Johnson, CDT's Senior Resident Fellow. "We are excited about working with them to develop new ideas for protecting the Internet and for creating a broader community of scholars who care about the Internet's core values." Juan Mendez Joins Visiting Faculty at WCL
WCL is proud to welcome Juan Mendez, an international law expert who has devoted his legal career to human rights advocacy and legal education, as a visiting faculty member. Mendez was recently named as the Special Advisor on Crime Prevention at the International Criminal Court. He will be teaching a variety of international human rights law courses in the 2009-10 year. WCL Lawyer Re-entry Program Returns this Fall
The WCL Lawyer Re-entry Program is returning with a six day session in October. The program prepares lawyers to re-enter the profession after time away by helping them explore career options, update their knowledge and job search skills, and learn how to reestablish their professional networks. Washington College of Law Professor Jonathan Baker Named Chief Economist at FCC
Professor Jonathan Baker has been named chief economist at the Federal Communications Commission. He will join the FCC's Office of Strategic Planning. "We are thrilled that Professor Baker has been appointed to this critical position," said Washington College of Law Dean Claudio Grossman. "His extensive experience in antitrust and economic regulation will greatly enrich the decision making process of the administration." MORE

WCL Dean Claudio Grossman Featured in Americas Quarterly
Dean Claudio Grossman's article on "Preparing Human Rights Advocates: Institutionalizing from Below" is in this month's issue of Americas Quarterly, a journal published by the Council of the Americas that is dedicated to deepening policy analysis and debate on economics, finance, and politics in the region. In the article, Grossman discusses the expansion of the Inter-American human rights system, the central role of law students in that expansion, the importance of continual growth in human rights law education, and the leading role that WCL has taken in shaping human rights education in the Americas. Grossman's article is part of a larger feature focusing on human rights law that includes other leading scholars and activists in the field.
