ABA President Delivers Remarks at 2011 Commencement

Stephen N. Zack, the first Hispanic and Cuban-American president of the American Bar Association, delivered the commencement address to graduates of American University Washington College of Law on Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. In the Spring 2011 graduating class, 444 students earned their Juris Doctor (JD), 99 graduating with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) -- 74 with an LL.M. in International Legal Studies and 25 with an LL.M. in Law and Government -- and four with a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD). Law Firm Staffed Almost Entirely by American University Washington College of Law Graduates

Attorneys at the Law Offices of Gary M. Gilbert & Associates are a unique group. Especially considering how the firm is staffed -- there are 15 attorneys working at the firm, and 13 of them graduated from American University Washington College of Law. The firm has developed a "farm system" that recruits associates through the law school's Externship Program. MORE

Clinic Negotiates Settlement with Guatemala in Arbenz Case

On May 26, representatives of the family of former Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz Guzman signed a historic settlement with representatives from the Republic of Guatemala at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The Arbenz family has been represented for the last five years by multiple student teams from the International Human Rights Law Clinic at American University Washington College of Law. MORE

Latino/a Graduates Gather for PASOS Event

On Friday, May 20 at 7 p.m., American University Washington College of Law hosted the PASOS event for all local graduating Latino/a law students and their families.  The unique ceremony featured a keynote address from The Hon. Marisa J. Demeo, associate judge, Superior Court of the District of Columbia.  The ceremony is presented by the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia Foundation. 

Law School Hosts Sixteenth Annual Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition

The Sixteenth Annual Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition will take place May 22-27 at American University Washington College of Law. The event is presented by the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. This year's competition was the largest its history, with a record number of 105 teams from 36 different countries and territories, involving more than 300 students, professors, and human rights professionals. Dean Claudio Grossman Visits Law Firm Arent Fox

Dean Claudio Grossman in conjunction with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations hosted an alumni luncheon at Arent Fox LLP, on May 2. Pamela M. Deese '83 helped organize this event. Dean Grossman updated alumni on the state of the law school as well as new academic programs, student accomplishments, and recent honors. The Dean's Firm Visit Program promotes continued excellence in legal education by engaging alumni at law firms in career development and otheroutreach efforts. Students Organize, Run Foreclosure Prevention Project for Region's Homeowners

A group of students, led by recent graduates Bradford Voegeli '11 and Megan Chapman '11, has put together an organization aimed at educating residents in Maryland and DC on their options when facing foreclosure. Dubbed "Take Back Your Home," the project is the first of its kind in the region. The work won't end with the group leaders' graduation – a new crop of law students is poised to take over for Voegeli and Chapman.
