Recognized as Canada's premier bilingual university, the University of Ottawa was established as the College of Bytown in 1848. It is located in the heart of the nation’s capital, at the crossroads of French and English Canada, and has carved a place of distinction for itself among Canada's leading universities. Its campus provides a vibrant setting for the exchange of ideas and promotes the cross-pollination of knowledge and cultures.

The University of Ottawa is unique in allowing its students to choose their preferred language of study. It offers courses in Canada's two official languages and enables students to pursue studies in French, English or both. Students may also choose to improve their linguistic skills by taking courses at the University's Second Language Institute.

The Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa teaches both common law and civil law, and provides a unique opportunity to study both legal systems. These two systems are present in over 72 percent of the countries of the world and knowledge of both helps to ensure access to national and international markets in an era of globalization.  The following is a selection of courses offered.  Students may choose from a number of classes offered at the University of Ottawa.
