2003 Dissertation
"Don't Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay for a Landslide"
Loughry successfully completed his S.J.D. dissertation and graduated from American University, Washington College of Law in 2003. He later turned his dissertation into a published book, “Don’t Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay For A Landslide.” His 656-page book highlights West Virginia’s unique history of political corruption from 1861 until 2006 and includes forewords by United States Senators Robert C. Byrd and John McCain. The book also contains testimonials by former Governor and current President of The College Board, Gaston Caperton; American University Law Professor, Maryland State Senator, and author, Jamin Raskin; Editor of The Washington Monthly, Charlie Peters; West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Elliott “Spike” Maynard; and radio talk show host Hoppy Kercheval. Within the book, Loughry examines vote-buying and vote-selling, explains how West Virginia’s political environment is the most corrupt in the nation, and details the millions of dollars that pour into the state’s rural elections. He further develops and illustrates a unique fifty-point plan to reform the state’s politics and explores how reform in West Virginia could lead to reform on a national level. Loughry also provides a fresh look at the 1960 John F. Kennedy Presidential Campaign in West Virginia, as well as include chapters on Mother Jones and the Hatfields and McCoys.
